Meet some of the Gothenburg Irish

GIG In the Press

Marie Grundström Profile

Marie Grundström
Hej! I am originally Swedish and have spent ten years living in Dubin. There i met my "Sambo" Phil and we moved back to Gothenburg where I got a
position as a phd student (doktorand) at the Univesity. My research involves measuring air quality and its likely health effects in Gothenburg and suggesting how it can be improved. I support the dubs and like dance music. Btw doing a phd in Sweden is fabelous. It is well paid and lasts for five years so one has plenty of time to do reseach properly and get papers published. There is usually a chance to do teaching as well. Get on to me if you want to know more. My slogan is, Heja Irland :)

Billy Finn Profile

Billy Finn
How are the lads, I came to Gothenburg town in 1999 seeking adventure and got a job at volvo. Between getting to know this new city I my lovely wife Courtney and we both got working at a childcare centre called ABC. ABC is an english language daycare for a mix of Swedish and expat kids from age 1 to 7. In my spare time I run Gothenburg GAA club and am also director of the European Hurling league. I am currently Scandanavian puc fada champion, how about that. My slogan is, C'mon Limerick :) Give me a shout if ya think I can give you any tips about moving to or settlin in to Gothenburg.
Mail: billy.finn @ gmail.com

Malachy Keena Profile

Malachy Keena
Allright there a chairde, I am from Dublin town and moved over here with my sambo Hanna and our daughter last year. Just like Andy the facilities for childcare were the main factor. We found it hard to find somewhere to live in Gothenburg so we ended up moving to a town outside of the city called Alingsås. It is quiet but the nature is amazing and there is easy access to everything. A safe place to bring up kids to be sure. I am a book binder by trade and I got a start at a big printing works here a few months ago. The language is coming along nicely, its not really that different from english. In my spare time I play GAA and have gone from playing Dublin senior club A1 divsion with Parnells to European shield with Gothenburg. Sthill its good craic to meet the lads once a week. Give me a shout if you want to hear more. My slogan is, up the Dubs :)
Mail: mjkeena77 @ gmail.com

Andy Hardiman Profile

Andy Hardiman I came here in 2001 as a love refugee. That means I am part of the 99%. 99% of Irish people end up in Sweden as they meet their partners in Ireland or in Australia or the like. So that happened to me in my native city of Galway, and then because of the fantastic natal and childcare facilities in Sweden there really wasn't any choice about where to move. Now Isabella and Seamus are aged 13 and 9 and we live a nice "Svensson" life in a wooden house in Lindome. I work as a tree surgeon and set up my own business soon after coming here and work within a 50KM radius of Gothenburg. It is a bit seasonal but well sometimes
it is hard when one comes here not knowing the language to find something.
Now I know the language so well I guess things have worked out. My slogan
is, Up Galway City

Phil Wong Profile

Phil Wong
Howayis, I'm Maria's sambo and I landed in this city two years ago without a word of Swedish. I got work as a cook in a thai restaurant. So if there are any new arrivals in the city looking to get into the catering trade over here i may be able to give some pointers...The social relations here are different to home so that takes some getting used to. The infrastructure is fantastic though so I guess you can't have it all. In my spare time I am a techno dj and was resident in Switch in Dublin for a number of years. My slogan is, YNWA :) mail: talktophilwong @ hotmail.com

Carpool Gbg-Rygge-Gbg Christmas 2013

Hi all,
We have been talking about some of fixing a carpool upp and back from Rygge for Christmas this year. Various plans have been discussed, including renting a minibus if any one particular day is popular.
But of course, we have to know when people are travelling and if they already arranged transport.
Please fill in the following Doodles if you are travelling to Ireland and want to join:
Gothenburg -> Rygge between dec 18th and dec 24th http://doodle.com/csm6y5gwsbhyh3xa
Rygge-> Gothenburg between dec 27th and jan 5th: http://doodle.com/vzvynf32nkpzqz46
I'm traveling on the 27th and back on the 31st, if enough people are travelling those days I am definitely thinking about renting a minibus.
//P.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK,
Final list for the bus to Rygge is
     Paul Curley
     Malin Kentsdotter
     Delia Ho
     Adrian Kelly
     Eoin O Brion     Ed Flannery
Am I missing anyone?
As we didn't fill the bus, it will 300 kr per person. There are two places remaining if anyone else needs to get to Rygge.
We will meet at the back door of Centralstation/ Nils Ericsson bus terminal at 6 am sharp.
One of the claims made is that the welfare state is funded a lot by revenues from the state off licences and bars. Now theres is a model for
Hej!
GIG has been making plenty of appearances in the media today. Check out the links below!
Many thanks to everyone who kindly contributed money for the advertisement in the GP. In the end we managed to get together the 3750:- that we needed!. The advertisement was printed in the GP today in the evenemang section, around page 71. So keep your eyes peeled for that if you have a copy.
For anyone who made a donation: I'll be in touch soon about payment, and thanks again for your help :)
Message from the embassy
Hej all,
Marianne Bolger the new second secretary of the Irish embassy in Stockholm has sent me the message below. She has recenlty replaced Ragnar Almqvist whom some of us used to meet on the football pitch. I told Marianne that we are busy preparing for the samhain concert this Thursday
and had not thought about St. Patricks day yet. I said that in the last two years that the GAA club has organised a St. Patricks day party here.
Marianne said to forward her email to anyone who might be interested to
attend the meeting in Stockholm in November or to just email their thoughts
and ideas to her. So I think it is fritt fram as they say here to make contact.
Marianne's email address is:
Marianne . Bolger @ dfa . ie
Apart from that it's just three days to go to Samhain :) Looks like Catherine MacHale will be interviewed in Göteborg Tidningen (GT) on Wednesday and a few or us will be on P4 morgon radio at 8:30am on Thursday talking about Samhain and trad music.
Slán,
Eoin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hello there,

I know that I haven't yet met everyone on the list and look forward to doing so in the very near future. Now that November is fast approaching, I thought that it would be prudent to give some attention to events in March 2014.  This year the Embassy , in collaboration with all the Irish organisations, artists and institutions based in Sweden, put together a very comprehensive programme of events in 2013 (attached for reference), which were very well received.

At this stage, it would be very useful to have your thoughts on what elements you thought worked best in 2013 as well as any ideas for next year so that we can develop a template of activities in 2014.  I would be also grateful if you could let me know if you or the Society/Group that you represent have any plans for St. Patrick's Day. The plans do not have to be set in stone as this stage. Once received,   I can compile a draft  list of events that will feed into the planning process so it would be great to have a response by 4 November 2013.  Many of you will already be aware that 2014 will the millennium of the Battle of Clontarf so this may  possibly help to inform the theme of the celebrations in Sweden.

I would like to hold a meeting at the Embassy in mid to late November to further develop the planning process.  Therefore, grateful if you could indicate your availability on the following dates at 17:30 at the Irish Embassy for a short meeting: Tuesday/Wednesday 19/20 or 26/27 November.

Please feel free to forward this email on to anyone else who I may have omitted.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Marianne

GIG ad in Göteborgs-Posten (GP)

Hej alla!
In the run up to the Samhain concert we have discussed the possibility of having an advertisement in Göteborgs-Posten (GP) next weekend. The concert will happen on the 31st October in in Musikenshus in Göteborg (Eoin has already sent out an email about this).

There are two reasons for the ad, firstly to advertise both the Samhain event and GIG. Secondly, in the hopes of making contact with elderly Irish people in Gothenburg. In some of the GIG meetings we've discussed that the best way to do this is an advertisement in the GP, that provides a telephone number and advertises some of our events.

We have 2000 crowns from other funding for this, but need the balance of around 1400 to afford the ad. We are wondering if people would like to donate a few krona towards this, from 100 up to 500. We would be really grateful for any donations,as the ad would hopefully be of benefit GIG. If you would like to do this, email both me personally (elaine . mchugh3 @ gmail . com) and Eoin Ó Broin (eoin @ skynet . ie) in the next day or so. Hopefully we can get enough to put in the ad.

The ad is attached to this mail (some more details to be added, but this is roughly what it would look like. It would also most likely be in black and white rather than colour). Any feedback/input about the ad itself is also welcome!
Many thanks!
Elaine

please help lobby Ryanair for a regular Got-Dub flight

Dear Swedish and Irish friends,
Ryanair is currently taking suggestions regarding new routes. Please write a few sentences telling them why you think a flight between Gothenburg and Dublin would be a good idea (i.e. profitable!) Following the link below!

Samhain Celtic Halloween Concert 31st October

Hej Ireland!

It was revealed to us today by a reporter from Göteborg Tidningen that there are 162 Irish people "folkbokförde" in Göteborg Kommun. Not sure how Irish is defined or how they got the info but there you go. They were looking for someone to interview in their regular series about people from all over the World that live here in Göteborg. Let's see whom they interview!

They contacted us as they had heard about the Samhain concert here on the 31st of this month. The concert is organised by us, GIG, the Irish music society and TIMSIG, and is part of the Planeta festival. In that regard it is on a par with the headline concert of Planeta which is Gypsy Kings! It is a music event in Musikenshus in Göteborg and we would like to see you all there. Performing on the night will be Göteborgs Catherine Hayes band made up of Catherine and her three musician friends, Lasse, Ulf and Pedda. Others playing include Banbridge Towns own Gray Hawthorne who will team up with Trollhattens Biorn Landahl onstage, and Francie Conway who is travelling from Ireland for the weekend. The headline is Brian Burns from Stockholm
who sang Amhrán na bhFiann before the Ireland Sweden match in the Friends Arena in March. He assures us that his music will be more up tempo
than that ;-) The day after Brian and Francie travel to Stockholm to perform
in a smiliar Samhain concert there.

There were a few reasons for the concert happening. First Catherine MacHale said that in Sweden it is thought that Halloween is from the USA so why not expose its Celtic origins. Others agreed we should do something. Then a Samhain concert was being organised in Stockholm anyway and they and asked us if we would be interested to do the same in
Göteborg the day before. Then when we asked Musikenshus if we could hold it there they said yes great and we will include you as part of the Planeta World Music festival too. As we are holding it on a Thursday too it should not clash with any Halloween partys which are held in Sweden on Saturdays.

Tickets for the Göteborg event are 150 krona and can be bought at the door or in advance through Pustervikbiljetter. Andreas from TIMSIG has designed a lovely poster for the event, see below. If you want any to put up let me know. The question has been asked if it is fancy dress? It is not but don't let that stop anyone dressing up as the rubber bandits or the like. It is a music concert, with a few halloweeny and Celtic bits included. There is a full bar and restaurant at Musikenshus. Doors open at 7pm and the music will start soon after.

Hope to see EVERYONE there!

Vi ses,

Eoin

There will me a mighty night of craic and ceol this Saturday evening at House of Win Win on tredje långatan where the Danish Irish folk trad group extrordinaire Tradish play a concert.

GIG-Irish film night on Wednesday, May 8th

A Cairde,

At the last GIG meeting on Wednesday, 17th of April, we decided to hold an Irish film night in the Haket pub on första Långgatan on May 8th. Mícheál has kindly offered to provide a choice of films to choose from.  I have created a doole poll, so that we can choose from 10 films. If ye could limit your choices to two films so as to make things easier that would be great.

We haven't decided yet as to whether show one or two films for the evening. There was a general feeling in the meeting that one film may be too short whereas two may be slightly too long. We could show a childrens movie prior to the main showing to accommodate families, or we could show a short movie prior also. Suggestions are welcome (there is a comments section in the doodle for any suggestions)

The below link is where your voices can be heard.
Looking forward to seeing you there,

Slán

Are ya coming to the GIG tomorra?

Gott folk!

Vi ses imorgon kl 19 på Haket for the third meeting of your favourite Irish association here in Göteborg. Since I sent the agenda out to the list last week one development is that there has been some contact with the Irish embassy in Stockholm where they have detailed for us how they can help out. All can be revealed tomorrow. I will print out a few copies of the agenda. As the plan is, after the meeting, we will adjourn
to another room at Haket where the TIMSIG Irish trad music session will be
in full shwing :)

Irish conversation III - comhrá Gaeilge na Goteborge a trí

Hi all those not facebooking,
Our next session to practice speaking your Irish is coming up again. This time we have changed the venue to the Dubliners on Järntorget at 17:30, this Thursday 18th. Just to show why alot of us Irish at any rate, need to start practicing our Irish have a look at this video!

GIG Meeting Wednesday week 17th April

Hello all,

attached is an agenda for the next GIG meeting. The items on the agenda
should be self explanatory. The meeting is being held in Haket to coincide
with the trad music session there. The idea is that after our meeting we
can hang out at the session. The meeting will be in the cellar bar, while
the session is in the side bar. That session is organised by TIMSIG and you
will smile when you see what that stands for. If GIG is to have legal status as a society in Sweden, we can learn a lot from TIMSIG about how
to do it. For a start we would need a constitution (see examples in minutes)
and then we need a board. See how TIMSIG have a five person board and a few
other roles as well. So we would need people who want to take on such roles.
Let me know by Wednesday week if you are or just come to the meeting and
tell us there.

http://www.timsig.se/doc/

See you next wednesday 7pm. Any questions, don't hesitate to email me, or forward this email to others you think are not on the list. I will post to the GIG facebook page too:

Just a quick note to cordially invite you, your loved ones and friends to an evening of trad music, dancing and Irish fare at the Portugeese Social Club, Jättestensgatan 9 1 tr, 418 72 Göteborg Friday 15th of March.
Fun filled and easy going is the general ideal.

The evening is from 7 till late.
A rough outline for the evening is as follows:
7-9 arrival, then arrangement/serving of food ( If we have any real fooodies out there dont be shy and bring one of yer creations along and add to our mini banquet)

After the food is finished at 9 we shall then embark on an evening of shenanigans that will hopefully make you laugh, feel warmly sentimental, start jigging and allow ourselves to be unashamedly tinted green.

Tickets are priced at 100 sek and covers all the evenings goings on. Please feel free to contact Kevin Higgins 0768778861, Billy Finn 0723704037, Paul Curley  0702679305 regarding tickets. Proceeds go to Gothenborg GAA Club.

Comhrá - Irish conversation evening - språkcafeet Thursday 21st Feb

Hi!
Just sending out this for those who havent got facebook!

To all out there who want to converse in Irish (Gaeilge) We now have
an Irish language evening in språkcafeet in Gothenburg! The concept is
simple, a group sit around over fika and try their best to chat in
Irish.
The first evening will be Thursday the 21st of February, 17:30 and
will be co-ordinated by John McBride. John is a long time resident of
Gothenburg and is a language teacher and fluent speaker of Irish from
a Gealtacht in Donegal. You do not need to be fluent to come along, we
expect and want a wide range of levels from fluent to those who
haven't spoken Irish in ages or even those who are curious about the
language.

The next GIG :)

Hej allihopa :)

I am writing to see what dates suit ye for a next meeting. I propose either Thursday 31st jan or Wednesday 6th Feb - at Haket in the celler there. Thursday seems to work well for people or did last time, while if we did it on the Wed we could hang out at the trad session after (See timsig.se). A rough agenda of things to follw up on and discuss are:

- An "Irish" day around one of the six nations rugby matches. Cormac suggested that the match against England on sunday 10th Feb would be a good one to watch. The idea from the last meeting was to start the day with the full Irish or brunch, watch the match and then do something
else after. Damian in the dubs said he could fix the full Irish anyway.
All up for discussion :)

- A bus and tickets to the Ireland Sweden soccer match in Stockholm on 22nd March. Nothing has been done on this so all up for discussion :)

- Ciorcail Comhrá gaeilge sa språkcafé ar esperantoplats. John and Damian are totally behind this so should be straightforward to arrange. Joe and myself can report on this.

- A premises for GIG. Barry and Peter were on to this.

- the facebook page, email list and webpage. Niall has been working on this.

- Setting up GIG as a föreningen (formal society with a skattenummer). Kevin, Patrick and Vince were on to this.

- St. Patricks Day party (and fundraiser for GAA). All up for discussion :)

- any other business. Mail me if ya want to bring up something else.

Mail me which of the dates suits ye. Then I will put together a proper agenda and send back to you and on the fb page too. I am just mailing those who were at the last meeting or showed an interest to get a date first.

Just a few intersting things from the facebookpage in case you didn´t see:

- Mark Whale was looking for people to go rock climbing with at Klatterlabbet

- Both David Burke and Cormac gave links to job vacencies in their repective software companies

Anyway If we manage half of that we will be doing well ;)

Vi hörs :)

The GIG is on!

Hello all!
Well the GIG is certainly on. Paul Curley has set up a facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/groups/GothenburgsIrishGroup/
and the mighty Niall O´Connor has set up an email list and a website/blogg:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/gothenburg-irish-group
http://gothenburgirishgroup.blogspot.se/

If you have not signed up to the email list you should only get this email once from me. I am sending direct to the email addresses I have too as a reminder about the email list. Forward please to any people whom you think may be interested too.

I am sending, well I won´t call it a newsletter, but it is a summary of the posts on the facebook page since it started. GIG could have a monthly summary like this. Does not take long to put together.
